When I first stayed at this place it was a happy accident. We loved it so much that we canceled our return booking at another hotel and booked with Helena. We travel twice a year through Richmond and always stay here, and send our family to stay with her too. She is welcoming and a wealth of information about Richmond and much of the area. We stay during the week and love LOVE love the local, organic and homemade breads and treats she puts out for us. Her coffee is her own roast too! The rooms are spacious and clean and walking the hill is so gorgeous. And when you're done exploring there is a different pub on the property with the best onion rings I've ever had. Take that back, we've only stayed in the king suites, but we've seen the third floor room and it's not bad. Not our favorite, but it's not bad. Can't wait until we see her again in September for the Browns Island river fest

We stayed here in May and was greeted by the owner. She is friendly but did not consider that we had driven 7 hours and just wanted to get to our room and unwind. She showed us to our room and then proceeded to talk and talk and talk and talk about her younger life and the things she had done, etc. We had to finally interrupt her and say we needed to get our stuff out of the car and relax before heading out to dinner. Although knowledgeable about the area she was WAY off on the price we would have to pay in the public parking garbage and it ended up costing us 3 times as much as expected. Went down to breakfast and were lead to the kitchen and told to help ourselves to a bowl of yogurt with choppied fruit; a hard boiled egg and toast that we had to make ourselves. Afterward when we asked about the limited breakfast and said that we figured since it was a bed and breakfast we would have had a larger breakfast she said that she was taxed as being just room and not board and would have had to charge us more for food and only gave us what she did as a curtesy and did not have to do this at all. This place is listed as a bed and breakfast but be aware it is not! For the price we paid we expected a quieter greeting and a larger breakfast and more consideration.

Helena is friendly and very welcoming. Our room was comfortable and breakfast was outstanding with homemade muffins, yogurt with fruit and granola—homemade as well. Great location as well!

Helena, the Inn's Owner, was gracious and welcoming. It should be known though that she does not live on site and that there are no other staff at the Inn after 9:30am unless guests are checking in or checking out. When she leaves the property for the day, all common rooms on the main floor are closed and locked off to guests. This made the stay feel a bit less "Inn like" since I usually enjoy sitting in a library or parlor while reading a book or chatting with other guests at night about their travels and adventures. You really are just renting a room in a house rather than enjoying that true Inn experience. But for those travelers who are more private, the room was quite pleasant and the location is perfect for walking tours and other site seeing.

We stayed at the Inn at Patrick Henry's not once, but twice - a week apart. We had a wonderful time, and it felt like 'coming home' on our second visit. The rooms are great. Even though the building is old (built before 1850), the rooms are very comfortable and have all the amenities you'd need. The (big!) rooms have great beds too. The historical building obviously has no elevator, but the stairs are easy with multiple intermediate landings should you have the Byrd's Nest room on the top floor, like we did. The area - Church Hill - is an older, quaint area, a mile away from downtown. This means it's nice and quiet. It does have quite a few bars, restaurants, bakeries on walking distance. It also features museums, churches, and famous old homes - there is lots to see here. Helena provides an extensive guide of local must-see's and must-do's, which is very helpful. The host, Helena, is a fabulous person. She's one of the warmest, most welcoming hosts we've ever encountered. Hospitality runs in her veins! She cooks great breakfast, which is all from scratch, nutritious, delicious, and varies from day to day. Helena is very knowledgeable about the area, which means that, when asked, she will give you great recommendations for places to go to see, for restaurants (thanks to Helena, we had amazing dining experiences!), and she also knows her history (ask her about the street lanterns outside the building!). Helena's helpfulness showed also when our car broke down (!) right in front of the Inn when we were about to leave for our next destination of our vacation... We will definitely be back whenever we're in the area.

We stayed in the William Byrd Nest on the top floor. It had a lot of character and was comfortable and charming. Breakfasts were absolutely delicious and we enjoyed being welcomed into the kitchen for coffee while Helena cooked for us. That brings us to the highlight: our innkeeper. She is charming, knowledgeable, friendly and fun. She is an excellent cook and knows all the best places to visit in Church Hill. We'll be back!

The Inn At Patrick Henry's is the perfect place to stay in Richmond. The location is ideal. It's not too far from the train station, is situated in a nice neighborhood within walking distance of a beautiful view of the city, and is within walking distance to neighborhood bars and food places (including the attached pub). Helena was an outstanding host. She made a delicious breakfast each morning and was full of information about the city. The room was huge and had the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Richmond.

My fiance and I just spent a lovely weekend at the Inn At Patrick Henry's. Upon our arrival, Helena assured us (okay me) that Edgar Allen Poe was a lovable character and to look upon the pictures of ravens in our suite as friends. It was even Edgar Allen Poe's birthday while we were there. Helena has a wealth of knowledge about my new friend Edgar, as well as local history in general. She is such a warm and welcoming inn keeper and I hope to see Helena, Ed (I feel that we are that close now) and the ravens, or as Helena calls them, Lovebirds, sooner rather than later. Great hospitality!
The Edgar A Poe Suite is named after the man himself - a Richmond raised poet, critic and father of American Science Fiction. Poe was very close with John W Fergusson - one of the original property owner's (The Fergusson Home) and head money printer of the Confederacy, as noted in the history of the home. The Poe Suite is on the 2nd floor of the Inn at Patrick Henry’s. It holds a master bedroom with king bed, bath en suite, living area with full seating, and is decorated in beige and dark gray tones with white trim molding. It has contemporary and antique furniture, and an alcove that holds a wet bar and mini-fridge/freezer. This suite has large windows, high ceilings and hardwood floors. The room has been provided with original manuscripts, poems and books about Poe. Room rate is standard double occupancy. Staircase access only.

The Scotchtown Suite is named after one of the homes of the founding father of the revolution – Patrick Henry. His most famous speech "Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death" was spoken at St. John's Church, just one block away from the inn. The Scotchtown Suite is a king suite on the 2nd floor of the Inn at Patrick Henry’s. It is magnificent and spacious, decorated in historical valley haze and blue hues with white trim molding. The suite also includes an elegant private sitting room with view of garden courtyard. This suite has large windows, high ceilings and hardwood floors. Rate is for standard double occupancy. Foccacia French Toast with Wild Cherry Compote
My most popular request is the Foccacia French Toast served with a dark wild cherry compote, and a honey, vanilla bean & bourbon mascarpone whip with toasted almonds and pinenuts. Served with a local thick-cut bacon or Virginia country ham and fresh fruit. I typically stay away from pancakes and waffles, but I'll cook it if that's what your belly desires! I cook and serve with organic and farm fresh ingredients. I also make my own breads, jams and other items when I can! Traveling the world opened my eyes to the ways to add nutrients to a breakfast when you have a long day ahead of you, and you're not sure where your next meal was coming from. I cook anything from roasted tomato & ricotta souffles, to vegetable frittatas, sweet & savory crepes, to scrambled eggs that had one guest calling me the Eggspert! I can't wait to feed you! Come stay at the Inn at Patrick Henry's
